Thanksgiving Sunday

Last week, Ruth and I spent some time in Midland. We planned this trip months ago as I insisted she see Sainte-Marie among the Hurons. For those of you who have never visited this 17th century village, I highly recommend going there.

I was introduced to Sainte-Marie back in 1983 during a class trip and it has stayed with me all these years; by visiting you get a glimpse of early Canadian pioneer life. From 1639 through to 1649 French settlers and the Hurons lived in harmony until constant attacks from the Iroquois forced them to abandon their village and set it on fire. The most incredible thing is the ruins lay untouched for almost 300 years. Research and excavations gave background to determining the rebuild of this village.

I have also included a photo below of Martyrs Shrine, the church that honors the Jesuit Priests who lived at Sainte-Marie
